NINE

Abby stared at the woman claiming to be her cousin with distrust and caution. Did she dare believe her claim of wanting to help? “Why should I trust you?”

“What options do you have?” Inez countered.

The truth dug at Abby. Did she dare risk placing her life and Jace’s in this woman’s hands? The alternative was to do nothing. And that was unacceptable. “Do you know where they took Jace?”

A frown puckered Inez’s forehead. “Is he the man you came with?”

“Yes. They took him away.” From the maniacal gleam in Marco’s eyes, Abby feared whatever the man had planned for Jace was beyond horrible. “I can’t leave here without him.”

Inez shook her head, her dark curls swaying with the movement. “Trying to rescue him would be suicide. You need to save yourself. Get away and send back reinforcements.”

Undoubtedly a wise plan, but everything inside her rebelled at the suggestion. Time and time again, Jace had put his life on the line for her. Yes, he’d been trained, and it was his job to protect, but she couldn’t turn tail and run. Her conscience wouldn’t allow it. “They’ll kill him.”

Inez cocked her head and narrowed her gaze. “Do you love this man?”

The question forced Abby back a step. “What? No. I barely know him.”

The denial came quickly, but didn’t ring true in her ears.

Did she love Jace?

She was grateful to him for saving her life multiple times. She cared about him. He was a good man. She worried he was hurt. Just the prospect of him suffering in any way had her stomach twisted like a pretzel. But love? She wouldn’t let her mind, or heart, contemplate the emotion. There was too much at stake. Right now, her focus had to be on rescuing Jace and then escaping. Alive.

“You’d risk your own life for a man you barely know?” Inez’s expression matched the doubt in her voice.

Debating her emotions for Jace wasn’t productive. Abby needed to save him, despite the quiver of fear racing through her blood. “Do you know where they took him?”

With a sigh filled with resignation, Inez nodded. “I do. But getting to him will be difficult.”

“Then we’ll just have to brave the difficulty.” And if she repeated the phrase enough, hopefully it would keep the terror at bay. “If you’re sincere about helping me escape, then help me find Jace, so we can both leave here.”

Inez was quiet for a moment. Then she took a deep breath and squared her shoulders. “All right. I would not be able to live with myself if I don’t try to help you.”

A sentiment Abby understood. Maybe they did share some of the same DNA.

Lowering her voice, Inez said, “We need to make a plan. And it needs to start with removing the guard from your door.”

Abby dropped her voice to a whisper, as well. “If you’ll lure him in here, I’ll hit him over the head.” She held up the lamp still clutched in her hands.

Inez eyed the makeshift bat. One corner of her mouth tipped up.
